How To Prepare Your Glassware
(Optional but has a lot of info – read our eBook HERE.
Firstly we need to prep the glassware, make sure you glass is clean and dry. We use an alcohol spray/wipe and thoroughly wipe over the glass with it. This will remove any oils from the glass that might hinder the application of your glitter. It will help the longevity of the glass too.
How To Tape The Top Of Your Glass
De-tacking your tape is very important. We do this by applying the length of tape to a roll of kitchen towel and few times over. This just makes sure that when we remove the tape from the glass it wont leave any sticky residue. If it does, don’t worry we can remove it but prevention is key!
With a clean and dry hand hold the glass in one hand and have the tape in your other hand. Place the firsts part of the tape parallel to the rim of the glass. using the little lip of the glass, follow it around until you get all the way around the glassware. Fold a piece of the tape upwards for an easy removal later.
Apply Mod Podge
Pour a 50c sized dollop of your Mod Podge into a small cup, we do this so we aren’t pouring too much sealant onto the glass and therefore reducing waste.
Dip your wide tip paintbrush into the Mod Podge and slowly apply it to the glass in long strokes, going from the bottom to the start of the tape line. Your application needs to be incredibly even. Be sure not to leave any streaks as this will be visible when it dries and the glitter will appear darker in this section. And don’t leave any gaps either!
Adding Glitter
Apply your choice of glitter all over the glass, please make sure that it is either fine or ultra fine glitter. Tap the bottom of the glass a few times to rid the excess glitter. Do this over a piece of A4 paper so that you can catch the excess glitter and pour it back into its container ready for the next layer.
Then carefully remove the tape.
Set the glass aside for at least 3 hours. depending on the climate where you are. We are in Australia so on a summers day it doesn’t take very long at all to dry. But remember leaving it to dry longer is better than not leaving it for long enough. As you run the risk of ruining the first layer applying the second.
Repeat Steps 3 & 4
Once you have allowed sufficient time for the first layer to dry, apply with your paintbrush another even layer of the Mod Podge. Make sure you go right up to the edge.
Sprinkle your glitter over making sure to cover all areas. Tap off the excess glitter.
Set the glass aside for another 3 hours to dry completely.
Ombre Effect
In a small cup, mix Mod Podge with water in 3:1 ratio (3 parts sealant to 1 part water). If you make too much don’t stress as you can use this for the next step also. Make sure you have mixed this well, you are wanting just a slightly more liquid type consistency.
Get your paintbrush and take the sealant to 3/4 of the way up the glitter. You can leave an uneven line at the top, it doesn’t have to be perfect. As this will leave a more natural looking Ombre effect.
Now get your second glitter choice (I suggest you don’t use an iridescent glitter otherwise you will have to do this step twice) and very carefully add it to the base of the glass. You will need to be holding the glass almost upside down, then you want to let the glitter just fall over the curve of the glass. Always start of with less glitter, you can always add more.
Do this the whole way around the glass. You can even tap the bottom of the glass as you are letting the glitter fall to help guide where it is going to fall.
Now take a look at the glass, you can pick up a little glitter in your finger tips and sprinkle it on in places that you think may need it.
Once you are happy with how it looks you can set it aside and let it dry for 2-3 hours.
Sealing Your Glass
This is where you are going to apply the final seal to your glitter glassware.
Take the watered down Mod Podge mixture and use your paintbrush apply a thin but even layer across the whole of your glittered part of your glass.
And that’s it! Let this fully dry over at least 2 days before using. Always rinse your glitter glassware before use.
