What you need;
- Cricut
- Heat Transfer Vinyl – Puff Black
- Weeding Tool
- Canva Pro to design
- Heat Transfer Tape
- Auto Heat Press
- Teflon Sheet
- Blank Baby Onesie
- Measuring Tape
Method;
Firstly hop over to Canva and open a blank design. Using text you wish to place on the onesie, create your design and save as an SVG and tick the box for Transparent Background. You do need Canva Pro to be able to use this feature. I think its absolutely worth it as now I can make my own SVGs instead of buying them. But if you don’t want to make your own design just purchase one off Etsy or find a freebie.
Once designed save it and open it in Cricut Design Space. Use your measuring tape, and measure across the chest of the onesie.
Make your design in Cricut Design Space this size.
We are using Teckwrap Crafts Puff Heat Transfer Vinyl in Black, they have the press instructions on the backside of the label. If you are like me and you just ripped that part off and didn’t realise, just hop onto their website and all the details are on the product listings.
Now Puff vinyl requires a certain level of experience so if this is your first time using Heat Transfer Vinyl I would suggest using non-puff. Once you have that nailed then move onto using puff. I also prefer using black over white coloured puff.
It is also important to note the puff vinyl expands so don’t create a design that has small gaps in-between each other as when it expands it will fill those gaps and ruin your design. Also it works better on smaller designs rather than big blocks of vinyl.
Making sure your happy with your design send it to be cut on your Cricut. Two very important steps; mirror your image and place your vinyl shiny side down. Then you are safe to cut your design.
When your Cricut is finished, unload the mat and weed out your design.
Switch on your press, in our case we have the HTVRONT Auto Heat Press, which is bloody brilliant, and so user friendly – which I love! Set it to your desired temperature and how long you would like to press for.
Once your press has reached its set temperature, lay your onesie on the drawer, roll over it with your lint roller to remove any fluff or hair and press it like this once. This will remove any moisture or crinkles from the onesie. This makes the best base to press your HTV onto so I adheres well and has longevity.
Take your cut design and place it face down on your onesie, measure the distance to the arms and neck to make sure its central. Use heat resistant tape to secure it in its spot. Lay the Teflon sheet over the design and push the drawer in. We have our HTVRONT Auto Press set to automatic, so when the drawer comes in contact with the back of the machine it automatically starts to press the garment. Once its finished it will release the pressure and all I have to do is pull the drawer out.
You can remove the Teflon, the heat resistant tape and the plastic backing should just fall straight off.
There you have it, a beautifully, personalised baby onesie to gift at your next baby shower, or for your lil one.
Until the next craft,
