How To Make Yarn Christmas Trees
Get your foam cone and cover it with your glad wrap, this will prevent the tree from sticking to the foam cone and then you can reuse it.
Using your selected yarn, start from the top or the bottom and place a bit of Mod Podge on the glad wrap. Start to wrap the yarn around the foam cone, we started wrapping ours relatively neat. It actually ended very rough and we are happy about that as it has given it a lot more dimension. So don’t stress about it being perfect.
We added more glue periodically. Wrapping and applying Mod Podge as we went.
Once you have finished wrapping the foam cone, we did about 3 layers. Cut the yarn off and secure it with a bit of Mod Podge. Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge to the entire tree. This is done to make sure when the glue dries it dries firm and will hold its shape. For easy application, mix the Mod Podge with a bit of water and give it a good stir.
We repeated this process for another two trees. This allowed us to style them all together. The will need to be left to dry for about 12 hours to become durable. Remove the trees from the cone by gently sliding it off the Styrofoam cone. The glad wrap will make for an easy removal.
As we have used white yarn. We wanted them to look elegant and understated. But at the same time wanted them to sparkle slightly haha!
Using pearls and glitter we created these!
What type of yarn do I need?
Any type of yarn will work. Having a mixture of trees using different yarns will give it a lovely dimension all put together as Christmas table center piece! Twine, string or rope could also be used if you wanted and alternative option.
Does it matter what size cone I use?
Always start off with a larger cone than you think and you can use it to make larger and smaller trees. All you need to do is start winding the yarn slightly higher up to give a smaller yarn tree. And start wrapping the yarn at the base for larger trees.
What glue do I need?
Mod Podge will work perfectly. Alternatively you could use PVA glue.
How long do yarn trees take to dry?
Leave your DIY yarn wrapped trees to completely dry for about 12 hours. Depending on your climate it may need 24-48 hours to dry stiff.
