Without reservation, Mod Podge – specifically Gloss. Made by Plaid Enterprises in the USA. It is as water based glue, sealer and finish. Best of all it is non-toxic and doesn’t have a harsh smell. Designed for arts and crafts projects it really is any crafters must have.
Around 10 years ago when I discovered Mod Podge, it was mainly used in scrapbooking for Decoupage as this was trending at the time. In fact it is known that Mod Podge stands for Modern Decoupage! However I wanted to used it for a different reason. And that reason was making glittered glassware. I glittered any piece of glassware I could find, then I would try all different types of material, wood, plastic.
It applied seamlessly to the glass and the glitter adhered to it perfectly. Then waiting 3/4 hours for there first layer to dry I would add another layer and let that dry the same amount. For the final layer I slightly water it down and apply it thinly this allows for the glitter to sparkle through. If it is applied too thick you will dull the glitter a bit. They do however have a product that has glitter in it and its beautiful. Please read – A Step by Step Glitter Glassware Tutorial for detailed use.
It really is an all round great product, you can use it from the first coat right up to the last coat to seal your project.
Firstly I would like to say this is my own personal review and experience of a sealant I have used and loved over almost 10 years.

Who Invented It?
Jane Whetstone developed Mod Podge in her kitchen back in the 1960s! She needed a specific product so she got creative and cooked it up herself, what an absolute crafting queen!
What Is Mod Podge?
Mod Podge is a non-toxic, thick-ish white creamy textured decoupage medium, all in one sealer and finisher.
There are many different formulas, all differentiated by their finish. They are not all thick and paste like either, they have sprays too and even their own line of foam applicators and paintbrushes.
It will dry clear when used in the correct manner.
Is It Just Elmers Glue?
No, Mod Podge is not the same as Elmers glue with added parts waters.
It is in fact a lot different to the above. It is a high quality sealer finish that will keep your craft projects safe from peeling, cracking or yellowing.
Be aware that making your own ‘mod podge’ from scratch, maybe similar in some aspects. But it definitely won’t hold up to the same quality and durability as Mod Podge.
What Materials Is Mod Podge Used For?
- Glass
- Wood
- Ceramics
- Plastic
- Canvas
- Terracotta
- Metal
- Card
These are the recommended materials but we are all about experimenting here so when not just give it a go, if it doesn’t work then try something else!
How To Use Mod Podge Glossy
These are the instructions as per product directions;
Apply with soft bristle brush or a foam applicator.
Cure time; 4 weeks
Personally I love to apply my Mod Podge Gloss with Royal & Langnickle paintbrushes, they are beautiful to hold and distribute just the right amount of Mod Podge Gloss. I find using a foam applicator to leave more texture and the chance of bubbles, but of course if that is the texture you are looking for a foam applicator is the way to go! Just remember this is the Gloss finish so it will leave your surface shiny. If this isn’t what you are looking for there are many different finishes available, and I am sure you will find one to suit your needs.
It states curing time is 4 weeks, this means to the point where it is completely dry and not tacky between all layers of your project. However drying time between coats can be anywhere from 1 hour through to 4, it all depends on the weather where you are and how thick you are applying the Mod Podge Gloss.
We have many video tutorials on our TikTok page that maybe useful too!
Where Can Mod Podge Be Purchased From?
I am in Australia so it is available in Bunnings Warehouse and Spotlight.
And not forgetting directly through Plaid’s website.
You can buy it in multiple sizes; 4oz, 8oz, 16oz, 32oz, 64oz and 1 GALLON! (Of course we have it in a Gallon!)
To conclude, there isn’t really any reason why you shouldn’t give it a go if you haven’t or even broaden your current craft inventory and try another finish, you will be pleasantly surprised by the results!
