Method
Open up Canva (we use the pro edition – you wont regret it, plus you need it to be able to save in SVG format!) we started with searching for a Santa’s hat that was simplistic, we need to be able to cut it on our Cricut. Selecting a text box put the initials in and make it quite large. Browse the fonts to find one that suits your style and position the hat onto the letter. We angled it to give it more of a realistic effect, like it was hanging on.
When your design is set and your happy, you need to save it. Be sure to tick the box which says Transparent Background and save as an SVG. This is a cut file that will be able to use in Cricut Design Space.
Open up Cricut Design Space, New Project and then upload your SVG. Measure your wine glass to see what size you need the design to be. I made mine no taller than 2.5inches but this will all depend on the size of your wine glass. Keep in mind the curvature of the glass, this will make it trickier to apply the vinyl if your design is too big.
If you have gone with the traditional White and Red hat you will have 3 mats so cut your vinyl to size, apply to your mat and cut away.
We used Cricut Permanent vinyl in white and black, and the red vinyl was from Oracle. You can weed your vinyl and layer it before you place onto the glass as one decal. Or, if you prefer you can do it on the glass, piece by piece. But before we apply it to the glass lets work on the glass.
Using tape, we just use any cheap tape. Make a line around the stem about an inch up from the base. Using a paint brush put some Mod Podge on to and evenly spread it onto the glass stem and base. Its important to not leave lumps or big streaks as this will be visible on the end product. So even distribution is the key. Using ultra fine glitter sprinkle it all over the glued section. Remove the tape when the glue is still wet. This will not only make a great seal when it comes to washing the glass but also will leave a crisp edge. Place the glass somewhere warm to dry for 3/4 hours. If your climate is very cool leave it for longer.
You can check the progress of the drying by looking underneath, when its fry there will be no glue visible as Mod Podge dries clear.
Place another even layer of Mod Podge and glitter.
Leave for another 3/4 hours to dry.
Mixing a few drops of water into your Mod Podge apply one last very thin but even layer across the glitter. this will completely seal your glassware. This will allow you to handwash the glasses.
Set aside for another 3/4 hours.
When all is dry using an alcohol wipe or kitchen towel and isocoyl spray prep your glass by cleaning it. You can now apply your decal.
Top tip, cut lines around your transfers tape, this will help when applying to the curved surface of your wine glass.
Now you can use these as place names on your Christmas table or fill them with goodies and gift them to your family and friends! I Hope your have enjoyed our Holiday Wine Glasses DIY Tutorial.
